Funding
In Buddhist countries there is a culture of giving, or dana, in support of Buddhist practitioners, activities
and organizations, as these are recognized as being beneficial both to the individuals involved in them and for
society in general. Indeed giving, or generosity, is the first of the six perfections practiced within the
Mahayana tradition.
In the west there is more of an attitude of having to pay for things, services, people, and many see little
benefit in giving to promote dharma. In a consumer society people would rather purchase ‘goods’, or they need to
pay for services, for themselves and there is more of an attitude of ‘make what you need for yourself and then
spend it’. This is not in accord with the Buddhist ethos, but realistically the provision of dharma does require
resources, and these have to be paid for.
We therefore make requested levels of donation that go to make provision for the teacher, heating, lighting,
building maintenance, publicity, travel expenses and food for visiting teachers, the creation of a suitable and
beneficial environment for meditation and practice, administration costs and so on, all of which have to be paid
for. We also need to raise the funds to buy the building used by the centre to secure its future.
So please be as generous as you can in your support as this brings benefit both
to the giver and those receiving. The continuity of the dharma centre and community
is dependent upon our kindness, and in practicing this we show that kindness works.
If possible please donate a regular Standing Order payment, no matter how small that you can afford. This will help the
Trustees to plan and budget for the resources needed. If you are a UK tax payer please also complete a Gift Aid form
at the Centre or fill out the form on-line as below.
